On Tuesday this week, Tony and Teresa Lovering were invited to join Jaguar Land Rover’s (JLR) carol service led by the Christian Fellowship at JLR. They had the opportunity to set up stall next to the mince pie table and offer people a New Testament & Psalms as they passed by or picked up a mince pie.
They met a lady there called Srilakshmi who emailed Tony and Teresa the next day, this is what she shared:
Dear Tony and Teresa,
I hope you are doing well,
I was very glad to talk with you at Jaguar Land Rover on Tuesday 13th December 2016. I would like to share my testimony with you, my name is Srilakshmi Channamallu and I am from India.
When I was 11 years old The Gideons came to my school and distributed the Gideon red Bible. I stored that Bible but I did not read it. I come from a Hindu family who worship stones and ideals, I used to do the same but I did not feel happy about that.
Before accepting Christ, my life was not wonderful. My parents and relatives felt very sad about me because my behaviour was very arrogant, I had a lack of knowledge and my behaviour was bad. I searched for God but I did not find anything.
When I was 16 years old my mother observed my behaviour and she suggested to me that I should try other gods, that I had better try Jesus as He may suit me, He may like me. My mother was not a Christian at that time.
At the age of 16 years old I started reading the Gideons Bible. God spoke to me and still He is speaking to me. He said heaven and earth may pass away but my words will never pass away. Your mother may leave you but I will never leave you nor forsake you. Humble yourself and I will exalt you. Love your neighbour, however you love others I love you the same. I started putting this into practice and I received His peace. Now I am with Him and He is with me.
By His promise He exalted me and now has put me in this job at JLR as His testimony. Now my parents and sister they are also walking with Christ. My husband also accepted Christ and we are serving God. God blessed me with two children to serve Him and I lack nothing in Christ.
Glory to God.
Thank you, Srilakshmi
Doncaster Rovers Football Club
November 2016 saw eight members from the Doncaster Branch of The Gideons present 300 Badged Testaments and 2 Badged Presentation Bibles to Doncaster Rovers Football Club (DRFC).
It all started in May when local member Chris Axelby was invited to a Bishop’s Breakfast. Here, Chris sat down with a stranger to enjoy breakfast and some local company. The first person Chris spoke to unknowingly was the Doncaster Rovers Support Services Manager. He was shocked to be sat next to a Gideon, especially as he had recently spoken with the Chaplain to DRFC about Bibles for staff and players. He and Chris were amazed that they should be sat together that day!
The result? On Thursday 17 November, Chris and 7 other Gideons met the Chief Executive of DRFC and the Chief Operating Officer. They presented them with 2 special DRFC Badged Presentation Bibles. In reply the CEO, Gavin Baldwin, invited all the Doncaster Gideons to attend a home match with him, including refreshments! The Doncaster members then had the opportunity to present Badged Testaments to some of the players, staff, groundsmen and chefs.
Everyone from the CEO to the apprentice groundsman were thrilled to accept a copy of God’s Word with their own club badge in gold on the front and they readily started diving into the “Where to find help when…” section.
So it all started with a “chance” meeting but so far God has made available to the people of Doncaster another 302 copies of His life saving Word.
The 2016 Haiti International Scripture Blitz
BLITZ
Weeks before traveling to Haiti, Tim McCormick was standing in the middle of New York City’s Times Square hoping for a personal witnessing opportunity to share the Gospel with someone who did not know Jesus. Even with thousands of people all around, the 58-year-old poultry breeder from Blackville, South Carolina, was still challenged to find anyone there who would stop long enough to talk.
Jesus told his disciples the world’s distractions would keep people from the Word:
“…but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.” – Mark 4:19
Few places in the world offer more distractions than Times Square with its giant digital billboards, flashing neon lights, costumed characters, Broadway theaters, and souvenir gift shops.
A few weeks later, Tim traveled to Haiti to serve with other members of The Gideons International in the 2016 Haiti International Scripture Blitz. They hoped to share 80,000 New Testaments over the course of five days. The reception Tim would receive in the poverty-stricken coastal community of Saint-Marc would be very different from that of Times Square.
Haiti’s Pastors Work Side By Side With Gideons
The fervent prayers of Gideons, their wives who serve in the Auxiliary, and others around the world opens doors for a blitz team. Those prayers opened the doors of Haiti’s pastors.
The event brought Gideons to Saint-Marc just a few days after Hurricane Matthew struck Haiti. The hurricane was the largest catastrophic event to hit Haiti since an earthquake back in 2010.
If you are accustomed to modern telecommunications, it’s hard to imagine how slowly news can travel in Haiti. In Saint-Marc, Gideons met people who were not even aware a hurricane had struck.
Though Saint-Marc did not experience the full force of Hurricane Matthew, lives were lost, homes were destroyed, families were displaced, and roads, schools, and churches were badly damaged.
“If it had not been for the pastors we would have been lost.”
When a few pastors in Saint-Marc heard Gideons were coming to share God’s Word, they spread the word to other pastors in the district. By the time Gideons arrived, the pastors were ready for them.
Gideons had to rely on the pastors to get them to all the schools, hospitals, prisons, and other distribution locations. Tim says he has never seen pastors and Gideons work side by side like they did during the week in Haiti.
“If it had not been for the pastors we would have been lost,” says Tim.
Roughly 80% of Haiti’s population lives below poverty level. Unlike many other countries, people in Haiti cannot depend on their government for assistance. For many Haitians, the struggle to survive is a day-to-day challenge.
Haitian Gideons coming from several miles away to help with the distributions traveled to Saint-Marc by public transportation. If staying overnight, they would stay with someone they knew in Saint-Marc, as the expense of staying in a motel was out of reach.
Hidalgo Delbeau is a Gideon in the Port Au Prince Camp, Haiti, who served during the blitz. “We had Gideons come from Jacmel, Thiotte, Carrefour, Diquini, Delmas, Pétion-Ville, and Croix des Bouquets,” says Hidalgo. “It was a real blessing for them.” He says that getting to serve alongside pastors and Gideons who came from the USA was a great encouragement for Haiti’s Gideons.
The event’s team leader, David Beaty, is a member of the Sante Fe Camp, New Mexico. He is a member at Legacy Church in Albuquerque and owns a small business. He joined the Gideons in 1987 and has served as team leader on prior International Scripture Blitzes in Argentina, Chile, Mexico, and the Philippines.
David says the pastors volunteered their cars and served as interpreters. “One of the pastors served with me all day long, every day of the week,” he says. Pastors even brought members from their own congregations to help translate, hoping they might be inspired to join The Gideons International someday.
A Real Hunger For God’s Word
“Anyone who realized we had Scriptures was desperate to get a copy.”
In Scripture, you can read of instances where crowds not only followed after Jesus, but actually “pressed in” on Him to hear the Word of God. In Haiti, Gideons got a close up view of what that experience was like.
“I found a hunger for God’s Word like I had never seen before,” says Tim. “Anyone who realized we had Scriptures was desperate to get a copy.”
On Monday, a hospital administrator led one team of Gideons through wards filled with patients, many who were dying. The team was able to place a Scripture at every bedside. Up and down the hospital corridors, benches were packed with patients’ family members and friends. Those copies of God’s Word beside the beds can offer comfort and hope to the patients as well as to their family and friends visiting them.
As with most International Scripture Blitzes, the majority of the Scriptures were distributed at the schools. Throughout the week, Gideons were welcomed with great joy by thousands of students and their teachers, excited to receive copies of God’s Word.
Late in the week, Gideons began to see the Lord had a much grander vision for His Word going forth in Haiti. Because of the poverty in Haiti, most dwellings are occupied by multiple generations of family members. So as children returned home from their schools with a copy of God’s Word that week, they were returning to share the Good News in a house filled with brothers, sisters, parents, and in many cases, grandparents, as well as other relatives.
Gideons know a single copy of God’s Word can touch multiple lives. That is exactly how God was using the New Testaments they were distributing that week in Haiti.
Lives Changed, In Haiti And Beyond
By the end of the five-day event, Gideons had distributed over 125,000 Scriptures to the people of Saint-Marc, far surpassing their original distribution goal by more than 45,000 Scriptures. Copies of God’s Word are now in the hands of Haiti’s students, teachers, hotel employees, police officers, hospital employees, and prison inmates. Gideons experienced the blessing of seeing students and others pray to receive Christ.
Hidalgo says an official of Saint-Marc and his colleagues met with Gideons to express their thanks for Gideons coming to share God’s Word with their citizens, and he asked the Gideons to never give up in what they were doing.
Haiti’s pastors were overjoyed as they witnessed people in their own communities receive Scriptures and make public decisions to receive Jesus as Lord and Savior.
“Since the blitz, we’ve been keeping close contact with the people we met in Saint-Marc,” says Hidalgo. He has already made a return trip to Saint-Marc to continue building relationships there which could lead to more open doors for Scripture distributions in the future.
Julius Grubbs, Jr. is a Gideon from New Iberia, Louisiana, who participated in the Haiti blitz. The sights of Haiti left an impression on him. “As always, a trip like this makes you thankful for what we have in the United States, and it increases our prayers for our brothers and sisters in those countries,” says Julius.
Tim is back home in South Carolina. However, fond memories of the Haiti blitz live on. He recalls finishing a distribution at one of the schools and being surrounded by smiling, laughing children who just wanted to touch him. “I felt loved beyond what you can imagine,” he says of the experience.
A few days after returning back home, Tim shared his Haiti experience at a meeting with members of The Gideons in his own community. He told them how he saw Gideons and pastors working together in Haiti toward one common goal – sharing God’s Word. “I tried to challenge our Gideons to work at building stronger relationships with pastors,” he says.
Although the 2016 Haiti International Scripture Blitz is over, Gideons who served in the blitz are not finished sharing God’s Word. They will continue to witness and share Scriptures back in their hometowns. While they may not all experience crowds of people as desperate for God’s Word as those encountered during this blitz, they can trust the Lord to bring the right people to them at the right time.
God’s Word Lights Up The Holidays
Testimony
For many, Christmas is a time of jubilation and harmony. For others, it can hold painful memories and serves as a solemn reminder that even amid a season of hope, we are not immune to sadness. Nevertheless, the Savior’s light shines most brightly in dark places, thus we can celebrate no matter the circumstances. What follows is a story of deep sorrow transformed by Christ into righteous joy.
Lowell “Bud” Paxton’s broadcasting career led him from radio to TV and the birth of the Home Shopping Network. He was flourishing, yet his business ventures kept him busy and away from home, so much that he did not realize his marriage was failing. On Christmas morning, 1986, at the height of his business success, Bud’s life hit rock bottom.
“We were living in Florida at the time, and all my family went downstairs and gathered around the Christmas tree,” Paxton says. “We sang a few Christmas carols and opened our presents.” Shortly after, his wife took him aside and explained that she was leaving him for another man. Within the hour, she took her presents and left.
Bud’s charmed situation was now a nightmare. Helpless, he knew there was nothing he could do to heal the marriage. It was broken beyond repair. He was left surrounded by the trappings of success, yet he was miserable.
His grown children insisted he accompany them on a planned holiday vacation to Las Vegas. “We had front-row seats on New Year’s Eve to the Buddy Hackett show,” he said. “Everyone was laughing, and I was sitting there crying. I was a broken human being.” After midnight, Bud slipped away to his hotel suite. Unable to sleep, he got up at 4 a.m. and started looking for a Gideon-placed Bible. He desperately searched every drawer until he found one.
Bud opened the Bible randomly to the fifth chapter of Job, and read how God rescued Job from hardship and despair. He then turned to the front of the Bible and found directions to verses that explained how to have peace with God. In Romans 5:8, he discovered that Christ had died on the cross to pay the debt for his sins. In that moment, Bud decided to stop pursuing all the pleasures of the world and to start pursuing a relationship with the Lord.
“When I put my faith in Jesus Christ, an overwhelming peace came over me. I knew at that moment that God loved me. I knew He was with me.”
The strong desire to serve God with his life and business led to many changes. Bud later sold his investment in the Home Shopping Network and eventually created Pax TV, now known as Ion Television, a family-centered network with the aim of providing spiritually-based positive programming for families to watch together.
“I regret I had to hit bottom before I was willing to listen to God,” he says. “But I’m thankful He was there waiting for me.”

Torquay United FC Presentation
Torbay & Teignbridge Branch of The Gideons International had the wonderful opportunity recently to present Badged Testaments to Torquay United Football Club.
Branch Chairman, Rick Hillard reports, “We were made very welcome and as you can see from the photograph, all received their Scriptures with a smile and were very appreciative. The Club Captain seemed particularly thrilled. I told them that receiving the Bibles did not mean they would win the League and that God has no favourite team, they just need to play the best they can.
“We did say that we would continue to pray for them as a Club and trust that their season would go well. Helen [Hillard] showed them how to use the Helps section at the front of the Scriptures and Philip Morrison (fellow Gideon member) read the prayer we had placed in the Bibles.”
We give thanks to God for more and more opportunities to present Badged Testaments to sports clubs across the UK. Keep an eye on our Blog and social media sites to hear more!
If you would like to make a similar presentation in your area please get in touch with us at hq@gideons.org.uk
With the Scouts
On Tuesday evening this week, members of the Rugby Branch were invited to visit the 3rd Market Harborough Scout Troop to share about the work of The Gideons and present them with a copy of the Scout Testament.
The evening was relaxed and informal and we were told to take as long as we liked as the young people were enthusiastic to learn about what we do and how we do it. We had a very blessed time sharing about the work of The Gideons, engaging in great conversations with them which finished with a great (and challenging!) Q&A session.
One of the highlights of the evening came when the boys first set eyes on the Scout Testaments; their eyes lit up and you could sense the excitement – something that we don’t think we have ever experienced on a placement elsewhere. We had the pleasure of seeing every Scout and every leader eagerly accept a Testament and we had a great sense that they appreciated the Testaments and would be showing their parents or guardians when they got home.
After we distributed the Testaments the leaders reinforced the importance of the Testaments, making particular mention that they were special and should be valued and cared for. Sadly it is sometimes the case when we visit schools that Testaments get left behind or disposed of but as we left that Scout Hut we were in no doubt that each one of those New Testaments would be taken home and treasured.
We give thanks to God for such a blessed and encouraging evening and for the excitement that it has given us since. Please join with us as we pray for those young people and their leaders as they take those Testaments home with them.
If there are similar groups in your area, whether they are Scouts, members of the Boys’ Brigade or Girls’ Brigade or whoever they may be, we would like to encourage you to seek these opportunities to visit them as we know you will be truly blessed by the time you spend with them.
An Urban Harvest
BLITZ
New York City can be a place of unpredictability. Almost nothing is unheard of in this dynamic center of world influence and contrast. When a team of Gideons participated in a Metropolitan Scripture Blitz to the city earlier this year, the experience matched the reputation of the city in excitement and wonder. Vernon McDaniel, a Gideon from South Carolina and a veteran of New York City blitzes, has traveled to the city for 10 years just for this occasion. “God has given us favor,” he said of all his previous experiences. His trust remained strong that the same favor would be present for this year’s blitz. Covered in prayer, these men entered the heart of a cultural juggernaut, trusting God for courage and divine appointments.
The first day began early. Gideons distributed New Testaments at six high schools and a college in Queens. In the afternoon, they visited The Bowery Mission in Manhattan. A historic institution, this long-standing mission has been providing hope to the city’s homeless for over a century. The visiting men received a tour and were shown the podium from which Billy Graham once remarked, “If Jesus was still alive, this is where he would be.”
As the tour was coming to an end, mission staff received word the speaker for that evening had cancelled. The slot was offered to the Gideons, and they accepted. After prayerful preparation, these few men had the complete attention of hundreds of homeless New Yorkers. The reception was astonishing. Some confessed sin, many asked for prayer, some received Christ, and all heard the message of salvation. After speaking, Gideons walked pew-to-pew, praying with people individually. One of these individuals was Joseph, a 30-year-old musician, who had become convinced of the truth of the Gospel and decided to give his life to Christ. “Drugs had ruined his life” Vernon said, yet “he said he was going to see if maybe God could use him again.” It was a divinely orchestrated scenario.
Later in the week, Gideons visited Rikers Island, the world’s largest prison. Upon arrival, their mission was delayed by complications. Their paperwork had been misplaced, and they did not have the clearance they needed. They prayed fervently, and in time, were allowed through every checkpoint of the maximum security facility. Gideons were also given an opportunity to present the Gospel message to a group of inmates. After sharing, one of the men asked who among the prisoners needed Christ. Hands went up everywhere, and together they spoke aloud a prayer of salvation.
Many firehouses and police stations were also visited by the blitz teams over the course of the week. In honor of the 15th anniversary of September 11, Gideon members presented an “In Memory” GideonCard to staff members who lost their fellow servicemen on that tragic day. There were many opportunities to share the Good News with the men and women who have dedicated their lives to helping others. “Each year we are welcomed into more firehouses and police stations,” noted Gideon Tor Torkelson of New York, “In each facility the desire for the Word of God is tremendous. It’s truly encouraging.”
While the Gideons were accomplishing their work, several teams of Auxiliary were also traveling throughout the city to deliver and place Scriptures at medical facilities and safehouses. The safehouses exist primarily to assist men and women who are homeless or who have recently been released from prison. The residents vary in background, culture, and language; however, they all have one very desperate need – hope. “We had the staff of one of these facilities tell us they could take 1,000 Scriptures every few months and never experience a shortage,” remembered Katie McCormick, an Auxiliary from South Carolina. “The desire for the Word of God is so great. When people realized we had Bibles in different languages, they were so amazed, and they would ask us earnestly if they could have one.”
“A blitz is a monumental task, and there are always a thousand setbacks, but God can do what we cannot”
When the blitz came to a close at the end of the week, Gideons and Auxiliary had placed and distributed over 190,000 Scriptures in over 10 different languages. “It’s amazing how God goes before us,” said Torkelson. “People often wonder why I’m never very worried about the details. God always seems to put the right people in the right places, despite what I plan. A blitz is a monumental task, and there are always a thousand setbacks, but God can do what we cannot.”
A donation inspired by a hospital testament
Dear Sirs
I first heard about The Gideons as a child when they visited our school to tell us about their work, this was over 40 years ago. I am now a regular church goer although I cannot say that I have lived as a committed Christian.
I am now 54 years old and last week found myself in hospital in Hove, East Sussex, for a hip replacement operation. I am not brave and was very anxious indeed.
As I waited to be called for surgery, I looked in the bedside cabinet and finding a Gideon Bible, started to read the notes at the front about how to use the Bible. I was immediately very comforted and spent some time following the guidance to read certain passages. Time passed and before I knew it, I was called to theatre and it was all over.
I remain very thankful indeed for the help I received that day. I have made a donation today to help you continue your valuable work so that some others can benefit as I have.
I hope that you will be able to continue to carry out this quiet good deed into the future.
Yours faithfully
Sally

Mexico university
During the recent Mexico International Scripture Blitz, Gideons were distributing Scriptures at the National University of Mexico.
“As we were distributing New Testaments a man came down the steps wearing a Dallas Cowboys shirt,” says Fred Jenkins, a Gideon from North Carolina. “Dallas Cowboys. Bravo!” Fred said to the man.
Fred asked the man if he would like a copy of God’s Word. He politely declined. However, after the crowd thinned out a little bit the man returned and said to Fred, “Can I ask you a personal question? Why do you do this?”
Fred replied that he was a member of The Gideons International and that Gideons distribute Scriptures to reach the lost with the Gospel. Then the man said, “No, no, that’s not what I’m interested in. Why do you do this?”
Fred thought a moment and replied, “I do it because I love the Lord Jesus Christ, and He has asked us to do this.”
The man said, “I’ll be right back.”
Fred thought he’d never see the man again. However, a little while later he returned, this time with a young lady, his daughter, Sam. The man told Fred he was dropping Sam off at college and had been trying to explain to her the most important thing in life. He said his daughter believed money, cars and a good job were the most important things.
Her father, a Christian, wanted her to know Jesus Christ was the most important thing. He then asked Fred, “Will you tell my daughter about Jesus?”
Opening the New Testament to the back cover, Fred shared the plan of salvation. As he walked through the verses the Holy Spirit began to move on the young lady’s heart, revealing to her the preciousness of Jesus’ sacrifice so that by faith, she could receive eternal life. And in the moments to follow, Sam accepted Jesus Christ as her Saviour.
Both Sam and her dad then hugged Fred. As they departed, her dad said, “Now I can leave my child here at school because I know she’s going to heaven and we’ll be together through eternity.”
The 2016 Mexico International Scripture Blitz
Blitz
As Christian business and professional men and their wives dedicated to telling people about Jesus Christ, Gideons go into the world sharing copies of God’s Word. During an International Scripture Blitz, such as the one that took place for two weeks this October in Mexico, local members as well as several members from around the world, distribute Scriptures and share their faith with others all day long.
The first of these blitz events by Gideons took place in Mexico City in 1978. In those seven days, Gideons distributed 45,650 Scriptures. During this year’s blitz, almost 40 years later, Gideons and Auxiliary distributed over 75,000 Scriptures on the first day.
More than 200 Gideons and Auxiliary from the 25 local and outlying camps participated in the blitz. From transportation problems to school access, many things can go wrong during a Scripture blitz. However, the team experienced minimal problems, thanks to prayers from around the world.
Sharing God’s Word With Mexico’s Students
“Gideons had a hard time keeping up with the constant flow of outstretched hands.”
Parents would walk their high school students to campus and smile at the Gideons. One parent mentioned in her best English, “This is good, congratulations!” At a middle school, one parent became so interested in what the Gideons were doing, he decided to pursue membership.
Gideons had a hard time keeping up with the constant flow of outstretched hands. David Eslinger from the Tulsa County North Camp, Oklahoma, said, “You’ve heard about the rate at which Gideons distribute God’s Word – about two Scriptures per second. That was us as we were distributing to the rush of students entering or exiting a school.” It was noted if the first few students did not take a Scripture, the next ones would not. However, if someone accepted the gift, everyone following behind took one as well.
One of the high school students who received a New Testament was Omar. After accepting it, he then tried to set fire to it. He had trouble keeping it lit.
That’s when he felt a change in his heart. He brought the New Testament back to the Gideons and said, “I shouldn’t have done that.” Gideons walked Omar through God’s Word, and this time the Gospel burned in his heart. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior. His friends watched from afar and came over after he left. They asked the Gideons, “What just happened?” This gave the Gideons the opportunity to share the good news about Jesus with them as well. And all four friends prayed to receive Christ.
Auxiliary Distribute Scriptures
The Auxiliary, who are wives of Gideons, were out in full-force. Grace Rivera of the Pueblo Camp led the Auxiliary team. “I love what every Auxiliary gets to do, every day,” she said. Grace and her team handed out over 7,000 Scriptures to medical staff at La Raza Hospital on the first day. The Auxiliary in Mexico are bold to step out and share Christ personally when an opportunity arises.
“I love what every Auxiliary gets to do, every day.”
Brothers for Life
The population of greater Mexico City is 22 million people. The total Scriptures distributed in the first week in Mexico City was just over 300,000.
The second week was spent in San Luis Potosi, a metropolitan city four hours north of Mexico City with a population of about one million. This was the first time the city has had a Scripture blitz. There is only one camp in this city; however, Gideons and Auxiliary from all around the region drove in to help exceed the goal of 50,000 Scriptures for the week by twice that amount.
“By serving on a blitz, you get friends for a week – and brothers for life.”
One of the members in San Luis Potosi, Victor Martinez, is a professor of architecture. He doesn’t speak English. However, he does say what he likes best about International Scripture Blitzes is the “compañerismo” or fellowship. Team members all agreed, by serving on a blitz, you get friends for a week – and brothers for life.
Please pray for more lives to be changed as a result of the Scriptures placed and distributed by Gideons and Auxiliary during the Mexico International Scripture Blitz.
